Office of Representative Naughton Announces Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants Awarded to Boylston and Sterling

CLINTON - The Office of State Representative Harold P. Naughton, Jr. is pleased to announce grants to 51 communities throughout the Commonwealth, including Boylston and Sterling. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service has provided the 2011 Volunteer Fire Assistance funding and will be administered by DCR Bureau of Forest Fire Control.

“The Volunteer Fire Assistance grants will be of great help to the cities and towns of Sterling, Boylston, and various others throughout the Commonwealth,” said Susan C. Templeton, Chief of Staff for State Representative Harold P. Naughton, Jr. “These outside sources of funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service will allow proper training and wild land fire protection for these communities.”

Under the VFA program, over $80,000 will be awarded to towns and cities across Massachusetts that is funded by the Cooperative Forestry Program (CFP) and the National Fire Plan (NFP). The Department’s Division of State Parks and Recreation/Bureau of Forest Fire Control, promotes wild land fire protection and training for cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth. Many communities have call and volunteer departments, who rely on outside sources of funding to provide for the necessary equipment that they cannot afford through the normal budgetary process.

The 2011 VFA Grant Awardees for the 12th Worcester District include: Boylston Fire Department, Chief Joseph Flanagan who received $3,980 and plan to purchase 15 UHF radios for the station, while the Sterling Fire Department, Chief David Hurlbut who received $2,810 and plan on purchasing forestry fire hose.
