Representative Harold P. Naughton, Jr. Assesses Tornado Damage Throughout Western Massachusetts Counties

SPRINGFIELD, MA - State Representative and Chairman of Public Safety and Homeland Security Harold P. Naughton, Jr., along with Governor Patrick, Senators Brown and Kerry, Secretary Heffernan of the Executive Office of Public Safety, and other public officials today toured the severely damaged areas throughout Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Worcester Counties that took a hard hit by the late afternoon tornadoes. The tornadoes caused at least four fatalities.

Representative Naughton assessed the aftermath of the storm on behalf of Speaker DeLeo in order to provide the Legislature with a complete report of the damages sustained by the series of tornadoes last night.

“I am in complete awe of the devastation that has been inflicted on these communities. Yet after having toured the area myself and after talking with the citizens here, I am incredibly impressed with the resilience of these individuals,” said Naughton. “People have certainly lost many of their things and homes have been devastated, but they have not lost hope. Many of the people I spoke with today are already planning to rebuild and we are all thankful that few lives were lost. Their spirit is unbelievable.”

Naughton also commended on the quick response of local, state and federal officials in coming to the aid of those affected by the tornadoes. “I am extremely impressed with the efficient response displayed by Governor Patrick, MEMA, and local aid organizations. After meeting with the Governor and other public officials in Framingham last night, I was confident that the Commonwealth would be able to respond swiftly. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Legislature along with the Executive Office in facilitating cooperation and the needed aid from federal officials.”

In the days ahead, Naughton encourages those affected to make every effort to ensure their property is protected. The Division of Insurance has issued a list of tips for homeowners filing insurance claims and has set up a consumer hotline to offer advice and assistance. Homeowners are encouraged to document the damage with photos, to avoid making repairs until it is safe to do so, and to avoid making permanent repairs until an adjuster has inspected the property. Naughton urges any homeowner who needs assistance to dial the hotline at 617-521-7777.
